UNICEF / LIXIL Partnership monitoring system
The UNICEF / LIXIL Sanitation Market Shaping Partnership is a unique effort that combines UNICEF’s strengths in sanitation promotion and behavior change with LIXIL’s innovative SATO product line, aimed at base of the pyramid consumers. To monitor the effectiveness of this market-based sanitation approach in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania, UNICEF turned to mWater to create an equally innovative monitoring system.
mWater monitors the uptake of SATO toilet and handwashing products at the household level by engaging with youth citizen reporters, who are college-educated but underemployed young people who are paid to collect data in the communities where they live. To track the sales of SATO products through retailers and community based organizations, mWater set up a call center in each country to collect monthly data that can be used to inform program learning and implementation.
